Maureen Bachaus’ work consists primarily of assemblages, with the basis is often formed by photography and/or lines of text. These assemblies are actually portraits of people, in which their feelings and thoughts have been a focal point. A (often enlarged) photoprint acts as a background, with assembled elements which suggest a portion of the underlying story. These elements are sometimes objects with traces of human use, drawings, or lines of texts that are in fact fragments of the peoples thoughts that reveal the essence of the mind at the time that the portrait was made.
A frequently used material is rope, sometimes pierced rawly through the image. This rope, sometimes in a knot, sometimes with hanging parts, symbolizes the limitation or even captivity but also the freedom experienced by certain thoughts and feelings.
Another essential aspect of Maureen Bachaus’ work is the human psyche, the freedom of expression, the human identity. Intense conversations with people become increasingly important as an input for her work, and have led to the ‘Identification project’ on which Bachaus currently works. Core questions of the ‘ Identification project’ are: who are you, and how did you become the person that you are? Is your identity your own free choice or is this determined by your genes, your country, your religion, your family, or your government? The identification project consists of photo-assemblages, installations and an ongoing art-video project.

Maureen Bachaus maakt  van toevalligheden , verzamelingen die haar wegen kruisen  geladen werken; assemblages uit verschillende materialen.

Gevonden verhalen , objets trouvées worden  geschiedenissen.met een eigenzinnige signatuur., haar signatuur.

Maureen Bachaus’ werk bestaat voornamelijk uit assemblages waarvan de basis gevormd wordt door fotografie. Deze assemblages zijn in feite portretten van mensen, waarbij hun gedachten en gevoelens het uitgangspunt zijn. Een - vaak opgeblazen- fotoprint fungeert als een achtergrond waarop geassembleerde elementen een fragment van het onderliggende verhaal suggereren. Deze elementen kunnen voorwerpen zijn met sporen van menselijk gebruik, maar ook tekeningen en/of teksten.

Een regelmatig gebruikt materiaal is touw, vaak dwars door de foto gemonteerd. Dit touw, soms in een knoop, soms met loshangende delen, symboliseert de beperking of zelfs de gevangenschap, maar ook de vrijheid die mensen kunnen ervaren door bepaalde gedachten of gevoelens.

Andere essentieel aspecten in Bachaus’ werk zijn de menselijke psyche, vrijheid van expressie en meningsuiting, de menselijke identiteit. Intense gesprekken met mensen over de gehele wereld hebben geleid tot het ‘identification project’, waar Bachaus momenteel aan werkt. Kernvragen bij dit project zijn: Wie ben je, hoe ben je de persoon geworden die je nu bent? Is jouw identiteit een gevolg van jouw vrije keuze of bepaald door je genen, je omgeving, je religie, je familie of je regering? Het ‘identification project’ bestaat uit fotocollages/assemblages, installaties en een video-project, waarvan een eerste deel tijdens deze expositie te zien is.
